ELEMENTARY CRUISING SAIL TRAINING

This course aims to enable you to sail safely, as a competent skipper or crew member, on a 6- to 10-meter sailboat equipped with an inboard or outboard motor in familiar waters, by day, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

It consists of practical and theoretical training.

We invite you to consult Voile Canada's complete Brevet Voile Croisière Élémentaire description.

Practical training includes:

  • seamanship  (nautical knots);

  • departure from the quay and docking;

  • sea gaits (close, cross, reach, etc.);

  • maneuvers: tacks, gybes, man overboard, etc.

  • safety equipment required;

  • emergencies;

  • weather impact;

  • appropriate crew behaviour;

  • basic introduction to the Canadian navigation system;

  • Etc.

2-step assessment:

  • Practical exam on the 4th day of training;

  • Theoretical exam, a written test of 2 hours based on the book “Introduction to cruising sailing”, published by Sail Canada in 2021, given after the practical exam.

INTERMEDIATE CRUISING SAIL TRAINING

This course reinforces the skills developed in the "Basic Cruising Sailing" and "Basic Coastal Navigation" courses. Students will need to acquire the skills and experience necessary for successful "live aboard" cruising. You can take part in this training as part of a group or with friends!

Since this is a "LIFE ABOARD" course, we'll be sailing between 4 and 6 hours a day over a distance of around 120 Mn. We'll carry out numerous maneuvers (tacking, gybing, sailboat rigging, man-overboard recoveries).

We'll also take time to visit these magnificent islands, enjoy the beaches and multicoloured fish, and sample the local gastronomy.

During the week, as skipper, you'll have to prepare alternative routes, analyze the weather, open a route plan with the Coast Guard and lead the crew.

Crew members will also be asked to prepare one or two topos:

  • Managing life on board;

  • Seamanship;

  • Electrical system, batteries, etc;

  • Safety equipment;

  • Dead reckoning, taking stock;

  • How to react in emergency situations (grounding, water ingress, fire, etc.);

  • Interpret a weather report and plan a cruise according to the weather.
